The Laboratory of Physical Chemistry and Chemical Processes (PCCP) of TUC is particularly active in conducting basic and applied research. Research and development projects conducted in the laboratory are funded by the European Union, the General Secretariat for Research and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the Region of Crete, local administration organizations or private businesses. All projects are centrally managed by the Research Committee of TUC. A substantial number of TUC undergraduate and postgraduate students are employed and trained in these projects; they benefit from the best possible training and they familiarize with current high-light aspects in chemistry/physical-chemistry, environmental chemistry and engineering, catalysis/electrocatalysis, sustainable energy, etc.

The focused research interests and the objectives of PCCP labare to discover, elucidate, understand and exploit surface, catalytic, electrocatalytic and promotional phenomena over complex composites and nano-structured materials. It involves determination of the electronic structure of adsorbed and reacting surface species as a function of reaction variables, especially in relation to reactivity/selectivity and molecular mechanisms, heterogeneous catalysis, environmental catalysis and protection, fuel cells, biofuels and natural gas valorization, sustainable energy. Aspects and problems addressed in our projects, quite often have direct and immediate relevance to important technological applications.

Current research includes investigation of surface-induced and support-mediated promotional effects and their synergy in heterogeneous catalysis/electrocatalysis, De-NOx-N2O processes, emissions control systems, fuel cells science and technology, sustainable energy and energy saving.

Surface and catalytic phenomena are studied by advanced analytical and spectroscopic methods such as High Resolution Electron Microscopies (HREM), in situ Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), Temperature-Programmed Desorption or Reaction (TPD/TPR), Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA and DTA), Physi-Chemi-sorption, Solid Electrolyte Potentiometry (SEP), and other spectroscopic, analytical and electrochemical techniques.
